Modifiable Factors that Increase your Risk for Hypertension

Welcome to my health organizations new healthcare blog, the purpose of our blog is to share information related to hypertension and how to prevent it. Our first post is about modifiable risk factors that lead to hypertension.

Lets quickly start by defining hypertension, according to the American Heart Association "High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is when your blood pressure, the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels, is consistently too high."

In this post, we will be discussing modifiable risk factors for hypertension, modifiable risk factors are those that can be changed such as diet and exercise.

Some modifiable risk factors for hypertension includes: "
unhealthy diets (excessive salt consumption, a diet high in saturated fat and trans fats, low intake of fruits and vegetables), physical inactivity, consumption of tobacco and alcohol, and being overweight or obese."  (World Health Organization, 2023).

- Eating an unhealthy diet: foods that should be avoided in order to decrease or prevent hypertension include salty foods, red meats, sugary foods and drinks, alcohol, saturated fats, prepackaged foods, and caffeine. Foods you want to eat more of would include grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

- Physical Inactivity: it is important to continually exercise and move your body to prevent your risk for hypertension.

- Obesity: if you are someone who struggles with weight, working on reaching and maintaining a healthy BMI can help reduce your risk for hypertension.

- To much alcohol: if you're someone who drinks, you may want to limit your alcohol intake to help reduce your risk of high blood pressure.

- Tobacco use: using tobacco can increase risk for hypertension, so you may want to consider decreasing tobacco intake.

In conclusion, it is crucial to monitor your diet and exercise regularly if you are trying to decrease your risk of hypertension, one of the most important things you can do is decrease salt consumption. If you meet any of the non-modifiable risk factors, it is important to modify what you can in order to decrease your risk of hypertension.

  1. Hypertension is a critical health condition that goes unknown in a lot of cases. With including the definition of hypertension at the beginning of the post helps the reader get an idea of what it is before reading how to fix it. Including modifiable risk factors can give ways to prevent or fix high blood pressure. I liked the layout of your post and the information included was educational. The video provided in the blog helped sum up the topic. This post is overall well put together, if I was to give some advice it would be to ensure all the paragraphs are the same color so it is easier on the eyes when reading. I enjoyed reading your blog and learning about the modifiable risk factors of hypertension.

  2. Hey Londyn,

You did a fantastic job on your blog! With how accessible fast food and processed foods are in today’s day and many individuals living a sedentary lifestyle, hypertension has become a very prevalent issue. Your blog nicely summed up what hypertension is and what people can modify to decrease their risk for developing hypertension. The YouTube video you attached to your blog did a great job explaining the risk factors leading to hypertension. As mentioned in the video, it is important for individuals to know that although they may be thin, they may still be at risk for developing hypertension, especially if it runs in their family. Hypertension is known as the “silent killer” and it is extremely important to spread awareness and be sure our loved ones get their yearly physicals and have their blood pressure checked.
